The Opportunity

Entering A New Category With More Than A “Me-Too” Product

Backyard Discovery saw an opportunity in residential greenhouses—but lacked direct category experience. The company already knew how to engineer, package and ship large prefabricated outdoor structures. Greenhouses introduced a different set of user needs, performance requirements and purchase expectations.

Initial Competitor Benchmark

The original brief centered on matching an established competitor in size, price and features. Our research showed that the bigger opportunity was to redefine what first-time greenhouse ownership could feel like.

WHAT PEOPLE EXPECT

“I can grow what I want for most of the year”

Earlier spring • later fall • healthy plants from seedling to harvest

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS

120°F+

On sunny days without proper ventilation

Extremely Cold Nighttime Temps

At night or in winter without supplemental heat

Opportunity

Make Successful Greenhouse Ownership Easier To Achieve

The concept evolved from an empty enclosure into a system that could reduce the knowledge, attention and add-on equipment required from first-time owners.

Product Strategy

We Found An Underserved Middle Between Budget Kits & Premium Structures

The opportunity shifted the brief from matching an existing competitor to defining a more capable, differentiated product between entry-level kits and premium enthusiast structures. The target was a “Masspirational” offer: credible quality, meaningful capability and backyard appeal at a price accessible to a broader consumer audience.
